MSc. Public Health Pest Management

The Sokoine University of Agriculture through its African Centre of Excellence for Innovative Rodent Pest Management and Biosensor Technology Development (IRPM-BTD) is pleased to invite interested and qualified candidates to apply for its new MSc programme in Public Health Pest Management. The programme is aimed at producing highly qualified professionals with skills and capability to effectively manage vertebrate and invertebrate pests of public health importance.

PHP606: Vector-borne microbial diseases
IPM600: Research innovations management and commercialization
PHP607: Vector-borne parasites
PHP609: Integrated pest management in public health
 

LEARNING OUTCOME

By the end of this program the graduate is expected to be able to: -

  • Evaluate potential pest threat situations and design effective management strategies
  • Carry out surveillance for prediction of pest outbreaks and prepare for interventions
  • Design and implement research programs on pests of public health significance
  • Conduct risk analysis in relation to pests of animals and humans
  • Conduct laboratory analysis and certification of public health pesticides
  • Minimize and/or mitigate hazardous effects of pesticides on the environment and non-targeted organisms
  • Apply appropriate integrated pest management strategies.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Sokoine University of Agriculture admission criteria for higher degrees shall apply. A candidate shall be eligible for admission to the Master’s degree in Public Health Pest Management if he/she has either: -
A Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) degree from SUA or equivalent qualification from a recognized university/institution with Distinction or Credit in relevant undergraduate courses;
OR
Doctor of Medicine (MD); Doctor of Dentistry (DD); BSc (Nursing); BSc (Pharmacy); honours degree in BSc (Public Health); BSc Biotechnology and Laboratory Sciences (BLS); BSc Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) from a recognized university/institution with Distinction or Credit in relevant undergraduate courses;
OR
Honours degree in Bachelor of Science (Wildlife management); BSc (Animal Science); BSc (Zoology) from SUA or any recognized university/institution with Distinction or Credit in relevant undergraduate courses
