The environment supports life, and is an engine for socio-economic development given the requisite science and technologies. However, some of the current technological developments in Tanzania and elsewhere in the world do not adequately consider the social, economic, and environmental impacts on natural systems and renders the environment inhospitable. While this is the case, some programmes offered at higher learning institutions in Tanzania are theoretical and less relevant to the job market. Consequently, some graduates have found themselves trapped in a web of lacking adequate skills in undertaking research in environmental sciences and technology.
There is also a gap in some curricula of Tanzania in terms of translating science, technology and environment into entrepreneurial opportunities. In order to comprehend the environmental problems and how they are interlinked, it is necessary to produce experts who will be capable of succinctly scrutinizing environmental problems on a global scale and their relation to the social and economic development at national and local levels. Therefore, this program aims to produce environmental professionals (managers, scientists and technologists) who are capable of employing themselves as well as taking up posts in research and academic institutions, government, industries, NGOs, consultancy firms and other related institutions.
