The chancellor of Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) who is also the retired Prime Minister of Tanzania, Hon. Joseph Sinde Warioba has warned that if there is no deliberate effort to encourage young people to participate in agriculture then the sector will remain for the elders only.
Judge Warioba made that statement during the opening of the new University Council triennium on 25th September, 2019 at Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro.
He used that opportunity to encourage young people to take advantage in agriculture sector and to leave behind the idea that agriculture is for old people only. In addition, Judge Warioba said apart from various changes in policies and regulations in agriculture sector, climate change has also been a major challenge for farmers and that Sokoine University of Agriculture is a leading light in offering training and expertise on how to tackle those challenges.
The other speaker at the event was the current chairman of the Sokoine University of Agriculture council, retired Chief Justice, Mohamed Chande Othman who used the opportunity to thank the authorities for completing the task of appointing new members of the Council. He indicated that the Council is comprised of a wide range of members from various sectors including academic, public service and other professionals.

On the other hand, the Vice Chancellor of Sokoine University of Agriculture Prof. Raphael Chibunda used the opportunity to give history of the university and various developments made. He said that SUA has continued to protect its resources including buildings, land and forests which is also used for research and training for students and other groups.

The Council of the Sokoine University of Agriculture is the governing body and principal policy making organ of the University. It is responsible for the management and administration of the University revenue and other property of the University, movable and immovable and it has general control over the conduct of the affairs of the University.
The council has a total of 14 members and it is chaired by Tanzania’s retired Chief Justice, Mohammed Chande Othman, the members are Prof. Raphael Chibunda who is also Vice-Chancellor of Sokoine University of Agriculture, Prof. Peter Gillah Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic, Prof. Yasinta Muzanila Acting Vice-chancellor (Administration and Finance), Prof. Adolph Mkenda Secretary-General of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Prof. William Anangisye Vice chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam.
Others are Dr. Abubakar Hoza Chairman SUASA, Prof. Amelia Kivasi University of Dar Es Salaam, Mr. Pius Mponzi Assistant Commissioner for Finance and Planning, Ms. Gaudensia Donati Chairman of the RAAWU SUA branch, Mrs Maryam Saadalla Deputy Secretary General Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources, Livestock and Fisheries Zanzibar, Mr. Dioniz Zacharia President SUASO, Mrs Maimuna Tarish Secretary-General (Retired) Office of the Prime Minister in Parliament and Mrs Lunyamadzo Gillah who is the University Corporate Counsel and Secretary of the Council.
