On the 28th and 30th of September 2022, a conference was held at KiliWonders Hotel in Moshi Town, Kilimanjaro Region. The conference theme was based on the Erasmus + EEISHEA project, which ends this year in 2022. Participating universities were from Tanzania, Ghana, Denmark, Sweden, and Spain.
The conference was designed to have presentations from each partner on the five thematic areas, namely: Entrepreneurship and Innovation (E&I), Sustainability (SUS), Student-Centred Learning (SCL), E-Learning (E-L), and Teacher Training (TT).
Below are the three keynote speeches that were delivered during the workshop;
- Dr. Violet Makuku from the Association of African Universities (AAU) in Ghana gave a keynote speech on “Transforming Higher Education for Sustainable Development: the Africa we want” and “Higher Education & Employability in Africa: Challenges & Way Forward”.
- Prof. Mtei presented a keynote speech on behalf of Prof. A. Mshandete- Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation from Nelson Mandela Institute of Science and Technology. His keynote speech was titled “Integrating Entrepreneurship and Innovation into the Curricula of Higher Learning Institutions”.
- The last keynote speaker was Dr. Jonathan Mbwambo (SUA staff & former Regional Coordinator for ACE II at IUCEA). He gave a keynote speech on “Higher Education and Employability in Africa: Challenges and Way Forward”.
Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) was well represented by EEISHEA Local Project Coordinator - Prof. Camilius Sanga, Local Project Manager - Prof. Anthony Sangeda, Specialist on Entrepreneurship and Innovation – Ms. Judith Valerian, Specialist on Student-Centred Learning – Prof. Ernest Kira, E-learning expert – Mr. Juma Kilima and Subject Matter Expert (SME) – Dr. Alex Alcardo.
The Way Forward
Following accreditation by TCU, it is anticipated that the developed curricula from the EEISHEA project will improve the skills, knowledge, and competencies of university graduates for employability and self-employment.
This is in line with the University Qualification Framework (UQF) which needs the University to shift to a student-centered modality of training delivery. This is done with the intention of inspiring students to learn and grow in their own abilities. It teaches them the skills they'll need to be successful business owners, rather than just workers.
To achieve this goal, the project builds a community of practice comprised of universities in East and West Africa that are pioneering student-centered learning approaches across a range of subject areas.
About the project
The EU Erasmus+ project - Enhancing Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Sustainability in Higher Education in Africa (EEISHEA), which aimed at developing curricula from the selected 5 African Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) embedding transversal skills, knowledge, and competencies in entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainability. Curriculum development will be based on the principles of student-centered learning and problem-based learning. Thus, the delivery method will be face-to-face complemented by an e-learning approach.
