60 Years of Independence - SUA recognize farmers' contribution to food security


Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in collaboration with the Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere University of Agriculture and Technology (MJNUAT) and St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT) have organized a public conference to celebrate 60 years of Tanzania Mainland independence. The event will take place at the Saint Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT) campus in Mwanza on 1st December 2021.

Speaking today, December 30, 2021, at a press conference in Mwanza, the Vice Chancellor of Sokoine University of Agriculture, Prof. Raphael Chibunda said the conference will discuss various topics on agricultural development and the contribution of farmers in ensuring food security and nutrition in Tanzania
Prof. Chibunda said in these 60 years of Independence, Tanzanian farmers have worked hard in the production of agricultural, livestock, and fisheries products and thus leading the nation to cope with food shortages when arise.

He also explained how the meat production by the country's pastoralists has contributed to the existence of meat at all times and in the fishing industry, Prof. Chibunda said researchers continue to ensure they fight various fish diseases in order to increase production by producing better hatchlings.

Prof. Chibunda said in making sure the conference discusses in detail the agricultural development in the country, they have chosen the theme of the event to be ‘The Contribution of the Agricultural Sector to the Development of Tanzania: Achievements and Challenges after 60 years of Independence’.

The conference will involve experienced keynote speakers from academia, political arena and private sector. The topics that will be presented and discussed are Agricultural technologies, Livestock sub-sector development since independence, Market for agricultural produce among smallholder farmers, The history of agricultural policy, and Agriculture and industrial development.

In addition, there will be exhibitions of various agricultural technologies innovations, products, and services offered by the Sokoine University of Agriculture.
