Vice Chancellor of Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), Professor Raphael Chibunda has expressed his satisfaction with the good performance of all staff in fulfilling their day-to-day responsibilities, where they have contributed to helping the university continue to earn a good reputation in all fields especially in the provision of quality education for students and conducting productive research for the community.
Prof. Chibunda made the remarks at the World Workers' Day (May Day) which was held on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at the SUA hall located inside Mwalimu Nyerere grounds, Nanenane in Morogoro region in Tanzania.
“Most of the SUA staff are very hardworking and dedicated, thus making SUA the best in various fields until it has reached the point now people outside commend SUA as a good university, so I congratulate all the staff and ask you to continue to be more committed to your responsibilities”, said Prof. Chibunda.
He added that this year, according to webometrics web of university rankings, Sokoine University of Agriculture has risen to the top position in Africa from 67th place last year to 53rd place this year, where he said that this is a major change and that the goal of the university is to rank among the top 20 best universities in Africa in the next two years
"This is a great achievement for the university, and we have the right to boast," said Prof. Chibunda
In terms of research conducted by SUA, Prof Chibunda explained that the same Webometrics in their results released in January 2021, ranked SUA number one in Tanzania and 2 in East Africa in the category of the institution with many citations where SUA had more than 89 thousand citations

He also commended the SUA Workers Union for organizing the event and urged them to increase awareness for all staff to recognize the importance of participating in major events such as this one.
Initially speaking while welcoming the Official Guest, the Chairperson of RAAWU SUA Branch Ms. Gaudensia Donati thanked Sokoine University of Agriculture management for the co-operation they have shown to make the World Labor Day 2021 celebrations a success.
She said the commemoration aims to help workers raise their voices and demands and devise new strategies to combat the challenges found in the workplace through trade unions.
Commenting on the slogan of this year's celebrations which in Kiswahili states that " MASILAHI BORA, MISHAHARA MIKUBWA, KAZI IENDELEE", Ms. Gaudensia said the slogan calls on workers to adhere to all the rules of working together and working hard so that benefits can be improved.
The May Day celebrations for the year 2021 were accompanied by the presentation of various certificates and prizes to the best 50 staff and 6 talented staff including the Vice Chancellor of Sokoine SUA University Prof. Raphael Chibunda.
