We would like to inform the community member of the Sokoine University of Agriculture and the General public that, the Chancellor of the Sokoine University of Agriculture Hon. Judge (retired) Joseph Sinde Warioba in accordance with the powers vested in him under section 36 (2) (a) of the Universities Act, 2005 and Rule 4 (1) and (2) of the First Schedule of SUA Charter, 2007, has appointed Professor Raphael Tihelwa Chibunda as the Vice Chancellor of Sokoine University of Agriculture for another five (5) years effective from April 24, 2022.
Prof. Chibunda is an Associate Professor at Sokoine University of Agriculture since 2011. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Environmental Technology from Ghent University (Belgium) which he obtained in 2008; a Master of Science (MSc) in Reproductive Biology from the University of Nairobi (Kenya) obtained in 1998 and a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine from Sokoine University of Agriculture (Tanzania) obtained in 1995.
Prof. Chibunda has held various positions in the university and government including Vice Chancellor of Sokoine University of Agriculture (2017 - 2022), Acting Director of Science, Technology, and Innovation in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (2016 - 2017), Assistant Director of Science, Technology, and Innovation, of the former Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology and later the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (2009 - 2016). He has also been the Deputy Dean of the former Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at SUA from 2008 to 2009.
Prof. Chibunda has done a lot of research since being employed by the university in 2000 as a veterinary specialist where he has successfully written various articles on animal reproductive health, technology, and environmental health in various national and international journals.
Currently, Prof. Chibunda is the Chairman of the Board of the Kibaha Education Centre (KEC), a Member of the Council of the University of Dar es Salaam, a Member of the Council of Moshi Cooperative University, a Member of the Hubert Kairuki Memorial University Council, and Member of the Board of Directors of SOTTA Mining Company Limited. He has also served as Chairman and Member of the Board and various Committees of Institutions and Councils of Universities.
