Sokoine Memorial week is annual event organized by Sokoine University of Agriculture to celebrate the life and legacy of Hon. Edward Moringe Sokoine, the former Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania who passed away on 12th April 1984.
The University organizes the Sokoine Memorial Week not only due to fact that the University has been named after him, but largely because of his commitment to development of Tanzania focusing greatly to the ordinary Tanzanians – whereby the majority are farmers. The week also serves to inspire the Sokoine University of Agriculture community to strive towards greater commitment to Agricultural Development and National Development in general.
This year's event took place from 9th to 12th April, 2019, at the main campus of the Sokoine University of Agriculture whereby the University units and other stakeholders demonstrated various technologies, ideas, discoveries and solutions that will helps in improving agricultural, food and health sectors in Tanzania.
On 10th and 11th April 2019 the Directorate of Postgraduate Studies, Research, Technology Transfer and Consultancy (SUA) organized SUA Scientific Conference in Agriculture and Agribusiness. The conference provided an opportunity for researchers to share knowledge, innovations, solutions, and findings that will help to transform agriculture and natural resources sectors for sustainable development in Tanzania.
The theme for this year was “Agricultural productivity and Industrialization for Tanzania’s Development: Lessons from Edward Moringe Sokoine and Prospects for the Future”.

Highlights from Day 2 (10th April, 2019)
On this day (10th April, 2019), The General Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Leonard Akwilapo has officially opened the Sokoine Memorial week to honor the life and legacy of Hon. Edward Moringe Sokoine at the main campus of Sokoine University of Agriculture.
Earlier before the opening ceremonies, Dr. Akwilapo and his delegations got the opportunity to visit the university farms and then visited exhibition site where he witnessed various Agricultural technologies developed at SUA and finally he participated in the Scientific Conference.
On behalf of the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Leonard Akwilapo promised to give Tsh. 750 million to Sokoine University of Agriculture to improve agricultural engineering by repairing workshops and other facilities
