To address water scarcity, Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) has acquired a well drilling rig. This initiative, facilitated by the Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) project, aims not only to tackle water shortages but also to provide practical training for students pursuing degrees related to water resource engineering.

During the handover event on September 11, 2024, at the Edward Moringe Campus, Prof. Ibrahimu Mjemah, Director of Planning and Investment, emphasized the significance of the new rig. He noted that SUA’s mission with the acquisition of this large well-known drilling rig is to mitigate water scarcity issues. The availability of sufficient water will enhance irrigation, particularly on training farms, and will advance practical instruction for students and stakeholders in well drilling and effective irrigation practices.

β€œThis rig will improve water availability at our university and will also serve as a teaching tool for students studying agricultural engineering. This is important not only for today but also for the future, as it will help us prepare the next generation of experts,” he said.

He added that the rig has the capability of drilling borehole up to 500 meters deep and addresses water scarcity across all SUA campuses. Additionally, it will provide services to nearby regions facing water shortages, supporting both daily needs and irrigation activities.

In closing, Prof. Mjemah expressed gratitude to the HEET project for making the purchase possible. He stated that the rig would enhance the efficiency of agricultural operations, particularly by ensuring a reliable water supply for the university’s model training farms.
