Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) and the Banat University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Romania have signed a preliminary agreement to collaborate on the area of exchange of professional experience in agriculture.
The initial agreement took place on February 11, 2020 at the SUA Main Campus which involved Banat University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sorin Stanciu, Deputy Principal of Agriculture, Dr. Laura Smuleac and Director in charge of Romania's Foreign Cooperation Issues and Leaders Dr. Raul Pascalau and Vice Chancellor of Sokoine University of Agriculture, Prof. Raphael Chibunda
Speaking shortly after signing the agreement, Director of Directorate of Postgraduate Studies, Research, Technology Transfer and Consultancy, Prof. Esron Karimuribo said the goal of Banat leaders coming to SUA is to establish partnerships that will focus on improving professional relationships between academicians and students from SUA and Banat.
Prof. Karimuribo said the two institutions are very similar as they have five faculties including College of Agriculture, College of Medicine and Veterinary, College of Food and Community Development and College of rural areas even the teaching programs are very similar to ours.
He explained that Banat university is from Romania where there is cold weather and Tanzania is in warmer countries so our partnership is an opportunity to learn more about how to do agriculture in the winter zone and take into account we have regions that have colder climates such as Mbeya, Iringa, Arusha and Kilimanjaro and they will also learn how to do agriculture in warmer climates.
Dr. Fredrick Chiwanga, a lecturer from the Department of Language Studies at SUA, said the partnership between SUA and BANAT will bring significant benefits to the nation, especially in the tourism industry as a result of the interaction between Romania and Tanzania.
For his part, SUA Vice chancellor, Prof. Raphael Chibunda said the university had gained the privilege of being the only university in the country to receive funding from the European Union through ERASMUS program to collaborate and share professional experiences and added that the SUA continues to use the opportunities available to bring about the University and the nation as a whole.
