The East African Community through the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO) has appointed Professor Esron Daniel Karimuribo, from Sokoine University of Agriculture.
The East African Community through the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO) has appointed Professor Esron Daniel Karimuribo, from Sokoine University of Agriculture, as the Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of the East African Journal of Science, Technology and Innovation. Professor Karimuribo becomes the second EIC succeeding Professor George Gitau from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. Professor Karimuribo will serve as EIC for the next five year from the official date of appointment which is 22nd March, 2024.
The East African Journal of Science, Technology and Innovation (EAJSTI) is a mouthpiece of the East African scientific community in seven thematic areas of Agriculture, food security and rural development; Health and wellbeing sciences; Natural Resources and Environmental Management and Infrastructure. Other areas are Energy and industrial development; Information and communication technology (ICT) and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The EAJSTI is a multidisciplinary journal which publishes original research of relevance to the East African community, covering science, technology and innovation. It is currently indexed in major global databases including the Scopus, AJOL, CABI and the India-based Gale. These databases offer faculty, researchers and students open access to scholarly, peer-reviewed content they would not otherwise have access to.
The goal of the EAJSTI is to enhance, advance and disseminate scientific, technological and innovative knowledge that supports regional development. It also supports the development of evidence-based polices, provides an avenue for the disseminating scientific research and technological findings to researchers, professionals and other stakeholders in the East Africa and beyond.
The East African Community (EAC) is a regional inter-governmental organisation of eight Partner States namely: the Republic of Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, the Federal Republic of Somalia, the Republic of Kenya, the Republic of Rwanda, the Republic of South Sudan, the United Republic of Tanzania, and the Republic of Uganda. The main objective of the community is to develop policies and programmes aimed at widening and deepening co-operation among the Partner States in political, economic, social and cultural fields, research and technology, defense, security and legal and judicial affairs, for mutual benefit of Partner States.
As newly appointed Editor-in-Chief of the EAJSTI, Professor Karimuribo will be required to contribute to the expectations and the EAC vision 2050 that underscores the need for sustained economic growth to transform EAC Partner States to the level of upper middle-income economies. This requires investment in science, technology and innovation as key drivers and enablers of sustainable regional development and socio-economic transformation.
