Ukerewe District Council in Mwanza Region has promised to continue to support the efforts of the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) to produce more seedlings after bought 10,000 fruit seedlings. The seedling purchased aimed at raising the income of the people in the Council but also to support environmental protection and climate change mitigation as it have been advocated by the Government. Apart from this, the Council aimed to safeguard the greening initiatives by planting more trees in order to preserve the environment and water sources but also promote self- employment.
This was said by Mr William Kaswahili, the Agriculture Officer from Ukerewe District Council, when he visited SUA Garden Unit and tremendous experiences at Unit on 4th March 2023.
"At the council we have a responsibility to ensuring that our community access day to day funds but also food from these fruits. That is why so we think it will be better to start strengthening partnership and therefore we believe from this kind of purchase SUA will continue with the production of quality fruits seedlings" he added.
It has been revealed by Mr. Kaswahili that, in the past their farmers incomes depended much from fishing industry but due to climate change and other unforeseen circumstances recently income from fishing have been progressively stagnant or declining. Therefore fruit's seedlings are expecting to be a game changer in terms of alternative source of income but also will open various opportunities in fruits industry.
"As long as we will be producing a variety of fruits, there will be people who will see this as an opportunity and they will start value addition in small and medium industries in order to process these fruits. As a multiplier effect, the Council's income will also be increased from this industry through collection of charges and other royalties" he said.
While at SUA he also had a short courtesy with SUA's Communication and Marketing Unit. When asked, what can be his advice to other Districts on what he saw at SUA Garden Unit, Mr Kaswahili responded "What else do you think I can advice?, I urge all Councils and the general public to come to SUA Garden Unit and see for themselves how quality these seedlings are. Apart from the quality you have a diversity of fruits of which I think no one will miss something to purchase. You have also given us professional advice on how to plant and manage them of which you cannot get this advice when you purchase elsewhere. Seeing is believing, they should come here and prove me wrong", he added.
On behalf of the Head of Department Mr. Mfinanga promised Mr. Kaswahili that the Garden Unit, will work with them side by side in order to ensure that the planting of the seedlings in their Council is carried out in accordance with all the procedures as well as the care until harvesting, to ensure that the objective of Ukerewe District Council are fulfilled well.
