TCU applauds SUA for giving students real-world experience in class

Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) through the Executive Secretary, Prof. Charles Kihampa, has praised Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) for its dedication and commitment to giving students practical experience in their fields of study. Declaring that this is the direction the 6th phase government of the United Republic of Tanzania is heading in.

Prof. Kihampa made the remarks on Thursday, October 13, 2022, when a team of staff and experts from TCU visited the main campus in Morogoro. The visit is a part of TCU's plan to travel to universities to observe how those institutions carry out their responsibilities.

During their visits, they stopped by the Fish Farming Unit, the SUA Animal Referral Hospital (where they got a firsthand look at an operation being performed), and the Incubation center for young people to invest in agribusiness, which they lauded as a way for young Tanzanians to break free from economic dependence.

Prof. Kihampa urged Tanzanians to continue to trust higher education institutions like the Sokoine University of Agriculture, which he claimed has a long history of producing graduates who are highly qualified to work in the agriculture sector.

"We have seen 17 different tractors, and now I know that students pursuing a career in agriculture engineering, for example, are required to know how to operate a tractor before they graduate. I can only say how fortunate the students are to be attending classes at a university where they learn real-world skills in addition to theoretical knowledge," emphasized Prof. Kihampa.

Overall he indicated that their trip was productive and thanked the vice chancellor, Professor Chibunda, for two things: first, for accepting their request to come to visit SUA despite the busy schedule he had, and second, for guiding them to the places they had visited.

Prior to that, Professor Raphael Chibunda, the Vice Chancellor, said a few words to welcome them to SUA. He told them about the campus and the history of SUA.

"At the moment, the university is made up of six campuses, which are the Edward Moringe campus (the main campus), the Solomon Mahlangu campus, the Olmotonyi campus (Arusha), the Tunduru campus, the Mizengo Pinda Katavi campus, the Ifinga tree farm with a total of 10,000 hectares, and the Mazumbai Campus (Lushoto, Tanga), where we have a forest with trees species estimated to be more than 200 to 250 years old," He said.

In addition to that, he informed them about various activities, initiatives, and projects that SUA is currently working on in the area of research, students' teachings, and social events. For example, he informed them about the Vice Chancellor Cup. This is a sports competition involving staff and students at SUA which helps to strengthen unity and solidarity among employees.
