Chancellor of the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) Retired Judge Hon. Joseph Sinde Warioba has called on university leaders working under the guidance of the Council to ensure they conduct researches that will help the nation face the challenges of shortage of food and cooking oil.
Judge Warioba addressed this on Friday, August 19, 2022, at the event of welcoming the new members of the University Council (13th Triennium) as well as saying goodbye to the members of the 12th Triennium of the University Council who have completed their term.
He said that there are times when the world is going through difficult periods to deal with various challenges such as diseases and wars, which causes various products, especially food and oil to become scarce and increase in price.
Therefore, this is the right time for SUA to conduct research that will help the nation produce more food and cooking oil because it is the leading agriculture university in the country with many experts.
He believes that this is possible because our country is blessed with enough land that accepts various types of crops including Sunflower, palm, Peanuts, etc. which are important raw materials for making oil products.
He congratulated the leadership of the university under Professor Raphael Chibunda for the great work they have done in running the university and the various successes achieved despite the challenges that occurred in the last 3 years including the one of COVID 19.
He ended his short speech by welcoming the new members of the University Council, the 13th triennium, asking them to continue to work hard in order for the university to maintain its good reputation in Academics, Research, and the provision of Services.
Initially giving a report on the implementation of the council's activities for the past three years, the Vice Chancellor Professor Raphael Chibunda also did not hesitate to congratulate the members of the 12th Triennium of the University Council under the Chairman Retired Chief Justice Hon. Mohamed Chande Othman for the great work they have done in the past 3 years from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2022, they helped the university management to fulfill their duties effectively.
Professor Chibunda mentioned some of the successes achieved during that period which include the approval of the new university organization and management structure, the establishment of the Mizengo Pinda Campus in the Katavi region, the establishment of the Tunduru campus in Ruvuma, the establishment of the Model Training Farm at the Edward Moringe Campus, and the improvement of various infrastructures including classroom buildings, student hostels, and university roads.
Another achievement is that the university leads by having a large number of best researchers in the country according to the AD Scientific Index, where for two consecutive years i.e. 2021 and 2022, the best researcher in Tanzania comes from SUA and is Professor Rudovick Kazwala.
The event was held at the conference hall at the Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) SUA and was attended by various guests including the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellors, Members of the University Council from the 12th and 13th triennium, Principals, Deans, Directors, and Heads of Departments and Units in the university.
