SUA Improves the Livestock Sector through Research on New Mastitis Treatments

The Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) continues to demonstrate its significant contribution to the livestock sector by launching the NANO COMM research project.

This initiative is focused on developing an alternative treatment for mastitis, an infection that causes swelling, redness, and inflammation of the breast tissue in dairy-producing animals. Through this research, SUA aims to address the ongoing challenges faced by many farmers in Tanzania, particularly in the regions of Iringa, Njombe, Mbeya, Arusha, and Tanga.

Speaking to SUAMEDIA, Prof. Gaymary Bakari, a lecturer at SUA and the lead researcher of the project, stated that this research is part of the university's ongoing efforts to find solutions to the challenges faced by farmers through science and research.

"We have identified that mastitis has become a persistent issue for dairy farmers, many of whom lack access to proper treatment or incur high costs to care for their livestock," said Prof. Bakari.

Prof. Gaymary stated that the goal of the project is to provide a direct solution for farmers, increase milk production, reduce treatment costs, and strengthen the livelihoods of farmers.

She added that for many years, SUA has been a leader in various research initiatives aimed at improving livestock health and enhancing the production of its products.

Ezekia Mbalwa and Lisa Kisanga, Msc students at SUA and participating researchers in this project, stated that, in addition to their involvement in the research, the project has supported their master's studies by providing them with the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge about livestock treatments and international research.

We believe that through this research, SUA will continue to be a key driver of positive change in the country's livestock sector," said Mbalwa.
