The Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) has emphasized the importance of utilizing research findings to inform national policies and development plans, with a focus on implementing 36 new research projects worth TZS 10.5 billion.
The Chairman of the University Council, Mr. Andrew Massawe, made the remarks during SUA’s 46th Graduation Ceremony held at the Edward Moringe Campus in Morogoro.
He explained that out of the 36 projects, 10 are funded by international partners, 2 by the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), while 24 are financed internally by the University’s own resources.
Mr. Massawe noted that SUA’s research continues to play a significant role in expanding knowledge and addressing challenges in agriculture, livestock, environment, and community development, thereby promoting the country’s sustainable growth.
He further highlighted that the University Council closely monitors the implementation of SUA’s Strategic Plan (2021–2026) and its nine strategic objectives aimed at enhancing productivity and efficiency. So far, 85 percent of the plan has been successfully implemented.
Mr. Massawe urged graduates to recognize that the world of work and social life are rapidly changing due to technological advancement and environmental shifts. He encouraged them to adapt to these changes, apply their acquired knowledge, and create employment for themselves and others.
Over the past five months, the Council has successfully implemented various initiatives to improve institutional efficiency, including enhancing transparency, accountability, and financial discipline in revenue and expenditure management. It has also strengthened internal control systems, improved revenue collection efficiency, and ensured compliance with internal audit standards.
For his part, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Raphael Chibunda announced that a total of 3,560 graduates from 85 academic programs were conferred awards during the ceremony. Among them were 2,029 men and 1,531 women—comprising 3,275 bachelor’s degree, 127 master’s, 18 PhD, 100 diploma, and 38 certificate recipients.
