On September 28, 2022, Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) through the SUA Animal Referral Hospital collaborated with Morogoro Municipal Council to provide education, advice, and rabies vaccination to Bigwa and Mindu Wards in Morogoro Municipality. The campaign was part of the stepwise approach to rabies elimination in the country.
During the exercise, more than 140 dogs were vaccinated in Mindu Ward at four centers: Lugala, Kasanga, Mindu Secondary, and Madaganya. In Bigwa Ward, 200 dogs were vaccinated at four centers as well.
According to veterinarian Dr. Isack Kashoma who is also Chief medical officer at the SUA Animal Referral Hospital, rabies is a virus-borne disease that affects domesticated animals such as dogs, cats, cows, goats, and even wild animals such as hyenas when bitten by a dog infected with the disease. Humans can contract this disease by being bitten by a rabid dog or by coming into contact with rabid dog fluids, particularly saliva.
Dr. Kashoma invites all pet owners to bring their dogs to SUA Animal Referral Hospital for vaccination. It is extremely vital since once a dog contracts this disease, it cannot recover.
Residents of Lugala, Ms. Resti Longo and Mr. Kedimundi Ngewe, expressed their gratitude to SUA for providing the vaccine and education. They encouraged other pet owners to come forward so that their dogs could be vaccinated.
Students studying the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) programme at SUA participated in the exercise as part of their practical training.
