Proper Planning for Training Materials Key to Effective Farmer Education

Proper planning and development of training materials play a crucial role in ensuring effective learning and knowledge transfer to farmers.

This was emphasized by Prof. Athman Kyaruzi Ahmad from the Agricultural Extension Department at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) during an AGRISPARK project training session for students developing small booklets aimed at addressing various challenges faced by farmers in Tanzania.

Speaking to the student researchers, Prof.  Kyaruzi underscored the importance of establishing a clear purpose for educational materials and he noted that a well-defined objective helps in structuring content that is relevant, practical, and beneficial to farmers, ensuring they can easily understand and apply the knowledge in their daily agricultural activities.

He further the need to identify the target audience before designing the materials. "It is essential to know who the material is intended for whether smallholder farmers, extension officers, or agricultural students—so that the content is tailored to their specific needs, educational backgrounds, and existing knowledge levels," He emphasized explained.

According to Prof. Kyaruzi, selecting the right type of training materials is key to effective learning, so he advised students to think critically about the format that best suits farmers, whether it be illustrated booklets, step-by-step guides, or reference manuals emphasized that materials should be designed in simple language with practical examples to ensure farmers can relate to the information and apply it to improve their farming practices.

Prof. Kyaruzi also highlighted the significance of setting clear instructional objectives when developing learning materials by explaining that these objectives should be measurable and achievable, focusing on increasing farmers' knowledge, improving their skills, and encouraging positive changes in their agricultural practices.

Regarding content organization and presentation, Prof. Kyaruzi advised the student researchers to ensure a logical flow of information, breaking down complex ideas into easy-to-follow sections and encouraged them to use illustrations, diagrams, and real-life examples to enhance comprehension, especially for farmers with limited literacy skills.

"Before rolling out these booklets on a larger scale, it is necessary to test them with a sample group of farmers to assess their effectiveness because their feedback will help refine the content to make it more practical and relevant to their needs," he said.

The AGRISPARK project, spearheaded by SUA, aims to bridge the agricultural knowledge gap by empowering student researchers to develop farmer-friendly educational materials. Through this initiative, smallholder farmers across Tanzania are expected to receive well-structured, research-based information to enhance productivity and address key agricultural challenges.
