On 2nd August, 2020, country's minister for foreign affairs and east african cooperation, Hon. Prof. Palamagamba Kabudi commended the great work being done by Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in improving the Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries sector in Tanzania.
Minister Kabudi made the remarks during a visit to the Sokoine University of Agriculture Pavilion, before taking the stage to speak to citizens, exhibitors and other agricultural stakeholders during the opening of the nane nane agricultural shows in the Eastern zone which has taken place in Morogoro region.
He said there is every reason for SUA to see the need to set up medicinal plants farms instead of relying on wild harvesting, there should be special and deliberate efforts to encourage people to plant trees for medicine, citing the example of countries like Madagascar who have stopped providing medicinal plants from the wild. They have planted large farms and now they are harvesting and providing the country with about $14 million in a year.
"Sokoine University of Agriculture is doing a lot of good work for the benefit of this country, but I ask you to increase your efforts to advertise these innovations so that more people understand and benefit from them because they are much needed by farmers, pastoralists and fishermen" stressed Hon. Prof. Kabudi.
He said he was grateful for the new election manifesto by the Chama Cha Mapinduzi for introducing the plan to set up a large pharmaceutical factory in the country, so it is important now to start thinking about it to ensure that there is enough raw material when the factory is established.
Minister Kabudi was also pleased to hear for the first time that SUA is the only institution that host National Animal Referral Hospital and that this is a big thing that Tanzanians should know and therefore make full use of it.
For his part, the vice chancellor of Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) Prof. Raphael Chibunda used the opportunity to show the official guest Prof. Kabudi ten tractors which was donated to SUA by His excellency Hon. Dr. John Pombe Magufuli, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania noting that they have been the catalyst for improving practical learning as well as additing other equipment for farming and teaching from local revenue.
Nane Nane also called “Farmers’ Day ”. It’s a time when the contribution of farmers and all involved in agriculture of all kinds throughout Tanzania are appreciated.
