It is with great sorrow, Professor Raphael Chibunda, the Vice Chancellor of the Sokoine University of Agriculture, announces the death of one of the University’s prominent academic member of staff: Professor Rudovick Reuben Kazwala BVSc (Sokoine University of Agriculture, Tanzania), MVM (University College Dublin, Ireland), PhD (University of Edinburgh, UK) who passed away on Monday 03 April, 2023 in Dar es salaam, Tanzania.
At Sokoine University of Agriculture, Professor Kazwala rose through the ranks from Assistant Lecturer in 1988 to full Professor in 2001, when he was appointed Professor of Veterinary Epidemiology, Public Health and Food Safety. Latterly, he had been designated Professor of Ecosystems and Public Health in the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Public Health, College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Sokoine University of Agriculture, Morogoro, Tanzania.
Professor Kazwala was also a prominent researcher and mentor of young scientists, for which had supervised over 45 Postgraduate (MSc and PhD) students, guided several Postdoctoral Researchers and published a total of 145 articles https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=KazwalaR in international, peer-reviewed journals.
Professor Kazwala served as the Chairman of Tanzania Veterinary Association (from 2005 to 2011) and Tanzania Veterinary Council of Tanzania (from 2013 to 2021) and was a member of the International Health Regulations, Roster of Experts in Veterinary Issues, Zoonoses, and coordinated research on Bacterial zoonoses (brucellosis, leptospirosis and bovine tuberculosis), viral zoonoses (Rift Valley fever and rabies) and food-borne pathogens (Salmonella and Campylobacter) in various networks in Africa (AfriqueOne, OHEART and ICONZ).
For the past one and half decade, Professor Kazwala had been the Tanzanian Director of Health for Animals and Livelihood Improvement (HALI) Project, a collaborative research between College of Veterinary Medicine at University of California, Davis and Sokoine University of Agriculture.
Since 2009, Professor Kazwala, collaborated with the University of California, Davis for which he led the USAID Emerging Pandemic Threats Program PREDICT Project in Tanzania, supporting the development of a wildlife disease surveillance and early warning system for high-risk viral pathogens, and pathogen discovery. As from 2014 to 2018, this work was carried out in tandem with the DTRA funded projects namely; (i) Zoonotic Select Agents in Tanzania – A One Health Approach to Rift Valley Fever and Brucellosis Surveillance and (ii) Evaluating Zoonotic Viral Sharing in South Tanzania.
Recently, Prof. Kazwala was also involved in the implementation of SEEDZ, HAZEL and Brucella Projects supported by BBSRC- ZELS initiative, collaborating with the University of Glasgow. He also led AfriqueOne ASPIRE Thematic Training Programme on Brucellosis in East and West Africa.
In 2019, Professor Kazwala was recognized and awarded by The Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) and Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) for his excellence in research in wildlife diseases and wildlife conservation in Tanzania.
In recognition of his outstanding record in research and research capacity development, Sokoine University of Agriculture, awarded Professor Kazwala, The Edward Moringe Sokoine Researcher of the Year for Excellence in Research for two consecutive years (2020 /2021). Professor Kazwala was ranked by the AD Scientific Index 2023 as Tanzania’s number 1 research scientist and number 4 research scientist in Africa in veterinary sciences.
