MAKISATU 2021: SUA praised for designing and developing various technologies

Minister of Education Science and Technology Hon. Prof. Joyce Ndalichako commended Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) for their efforts in the identification and development of technology and other scientific techniques as well as to support and develop designer and innovators so that they can achieve their dreams and help society and the nation.

The congratulations were given on 7th May 2021 during a visit to inspect the works of Sokoine University of Agriculture innovators and their exhibition before the official launch of the National Science, Technology and Innovation Competition (MAKISATU 2021) in Dodoma Tanzania. The event brings together innovators from all over the country in seven competition categories.

Speaking at the opening of the competition, he said that among the achievements of the Government in advancing Science and Innovation in the country is to identify and identify 1066 young innovators through MAKISATU 2019/2020 where among them 130 talented innovators are being developed by the Government to bring their innovations to the point of commercialization. thereby increasing employment opportunities for youth and contributing to GDP.

"It is my hope and expectation that the products produced by designers and innovators in the country will increase productivity in the production of raw materials for industry and increase the value of the products produced as well as improve and simplify service delivery in various fields," stressed Prof. Ndalichako

Prof. Ndalichako explained that in the period 2015 to 2020 the Government has funded a total of 215 science and technology projects and innovations in various sectors including Agriculture and Livestock, Health, Energy, Natural Resources and Industry

In addition, through the National Science and Technology Development Fund, the Government has empowered 579 researchers in Masters and PhD studies to increase their professionalism in research.

Earlier speaking before inviting the official guest to open the exhibition of MAKISATU 2021, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Leonard Akwilapo said the MAKISATU competition was launched in 2019 as one of the Ministry's strategies to identify and develop innovations made by Tanzanians and encourage the use of Science Technology and Innovation in social and economic activities that will support the development of the industrial economy.

He explained that in the two years of MAKISATU a total of 1066 innovators were identified and recognized by the Ministry and 130 talented innovators are being developed by the Government through the National Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) so that their innovations are marketed and thus increase employment opportunities for youth.

The Vice Chancellor of Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) Prof. Raphael Chibunda told the Minister that in ensuring SUA innovators reach the milestones they hope to donate 20 million shillings to one of their innovators Mussa Dotto who designed a farming tractor called FARM CART so that he can produce the three tractors into the market.

He said when they saw him, he designed a farm tractor and decided to help him through the university's creative fund but another goal was to show those who say education has declined to see how young people can do great things at university as well as benefit the community and the nation.

Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) is participating in the exhibition by showcasing its various research and innovative work but has also sent three innovators to the MAKISATU competition through a group of universities consisting of 10 innovators.

This year's motto is Science Technology and Innovation for a Sustainable Economy.
