Students at Sokoine University of Agriculture have been encouraged to take advantage of open data available online to enhance their academic pursuits and create employment opportunities while still in university and after graduation.

This was highlighted by the Director of the Directorate of Information and Communication Technology at SUA, Prof. Camilius Sanga, during the closing ceremony of a two-day exhibition organized by the Sokoine National Agricultural Library (SNAL).
The exhibition, themed "Open Data to Tackle the Poly-crisis," focused on SNAL’s chosen sub-theme, "Open Data for Food Security."
Prof. Sanga emphasized that while open data offers numerous benefits, it also comes with challenges, therefore, users must carefully analyze the information and explore the opportunities it presents, particularly in the digital age, where mobile and social media usage is rapidly increasing.
He cited an example of how a student could initiate discussions or share knowledge derived from various global data repositories, attracting a large audience. This engagement could then create opportunities for companies to place advertisements, thereby generating income for the student.
The exhibition provided a valuable platform for the community to learn, collaborate, and harness the potential of open data for their development. SNAL demonstrated how various electronic resources (e-resources) are accessible to students, lecturers, and the general public.
The two-day event took place in front of the SNAL building at the Edward Moringe Sokoine Campus in Morogoro.
