In gaining more knowledge and experience in the digital library revolution which is currently the focus of academic libraries around the world, the Sokoine National Agricultural Library - SNAL sent its 15 staff to attend a special digital training workshop to build their capacity to provide better services to its customers.
The event, which also included the annual general meeting of the Tanzania Library Association (TLA), was organized by the Tanzania Library Association (TLA) from 23 - 25 March 2022 in Morogoro and carried the theme “Digital revolution and the challenges of the new information environment: transforming library services, collections, and communities”
The event was opened by Prof. Carolyne Ignatius Nombo, Deputy Secretary of Education, Science and Technology representing Prof. Adolf Fausitine Mkenda, Minister of Education, Science and Technology where she emphasized on the importance of library and information services staff in having basic skills and capability in the current technology advancement.
Prof. Nombo noted that currently in library services provision environment most users are not coming to the existing library buildings but they should be given the services and resources from where they are using their own gadgets.
During the first day of the workshop topic presented was on “Design and Development of an Open Access Institutional Repository” which was presented by Dr. Evans Wema from University of Dar Es Salaam – UDSM library and participants learned various aspects of Open Access Repositories.
On second day the topic was “Big Data and Artificial Intelligence in Library Services” presented by Dr. Deogratius Mzurikwao from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences- MUHAS library where participants learned how to use Artificial intelligence in library services provision such as answering question and answers.
The last topic was on “The Role of Librarians in Fighting Disinformation and Fake Information” which was presented by Dr. Evans Wema.
The workshop had a hands on activities and discussion on groups where participants shared and learned from each other.
